An often underrated fixture in any coffee shop, bar, or grocery store, is the display case. It features all your tasty treats to complement your morning joe, or keeps the milk cold but it’s not necessarily receiving the appropriate maintenance. Keeping your refrigerated display case is essential both for food safety and to avoid costly emergency repairs.

5 Tips for avoiding breakdowns with your commercial refrigerated display case

  1. Remove debris daily

It is imperative that you remove any debris from your unit daily. Any number of items, bugs, and crumbs can get stuck in the cooler or it’s essential parts (like the rubber seal). This debris can build up over time causing seals to malfunction, mould to develop, or create an unsightly display.

  1. Check and clean evaporator coils

About once every month, we suggest you check and clean the evaporator coils and their housing. These coils are the component responsible for the cold air your unit receives… so you can see why it is critical that you maintain them! This area is located behind a fan which blows cold air into your unit. Without proper cleaning, the coils, fan, and housing area can accumulate dust and debris, causing them to function poorly.

  1. Door and seal check

We recommend checking the seal, door, and hinges on your unit regularly – about every two weeks depending on the traffic. Doors and seals which are not operating properly can cause the system to overwork, leading to malfunctions and often resulting in a shorter life span. These units aren’t cheap, so taking care of them will make them more efficient, and will lengthen the lifespan – saving you money.

  1. Clean those vacuum coils

This is the area which expels heat from your unit, and you probably know exactly where it is! Take a specially designed soft brush, unplug the units, and gently remove the build up dust and debris every one to two weeks. Transferring cold and hot to and from the refrigerator is how the system functions. It is imperative that you allow for this to happen unimpeded through regular cleaning to avoid malfunctions.

  1. Preventative maintenance

While there is a lot you can do to maintain the life of your refrigerated display case, we recommend a regular preventative maintenance appointment with one of our HVAC certified technicians.
